My letter to CFN

So I was mildly pissy about the USA Today Coaches poll, and decided to stroll over to cfn.scout.com to see if they had released their top 20 pre-season rankings. Scout claims that they conduct their analysis based on current pre-season talent and not on where they think teams will finish.

So armed with that information, I got excited, I mean really excited because the talent level on my Eers is only surpassed by Southern Cal. But then my excitement began to change to tears of outrage as I scrolled down through the top ten, as I passed 8,7,6,5, and 4, not seeing my Eers. They even had UL in the top ten, which should have easily equated to a #2 or #3 ranking for my ‘Eers.

No. We were missing. I was flabbergasted. This made no sense. How did we end up at 11? We didn’t end up at 11. I looked… my Eers were nowhere to be found. This was one of those Nowhere in the the top 20. Well now, I said to myself, this explains it. Somehow the idiots at Scout managed to pull a goof and left us out of the rankings. Won’t this be pie on their face? Has anyone ever flipped off their computer screen? I did, and I felt so much pressure melt away.

Attention my Mountie brothers – apparently Lee Corso runs Scout.com. Everybody knows that Corso has a huge boner for the Eers since we took a pass on his losing ass. Did anyone hear him say that we had no buisness talking BCS or BCS championship game. Not that it matters because he is a jack ass anyway. If they ever show up to Morgantown, they better some chicken fence around him and shit-pitter Mark May.

Back to the poll, I eventually found us… RANKED 24!!!!

Let me repeat… 24th.

We’re behind, amongst others – Florida State, Texas A&M, Miami, Oregon State, Cal, MISSOURI, AND RUTGERS.

The best part of all of this – SCOUT PICKED US TO BE IN THE BCS. Yup, they predicted us to win the Big East… but then say we’re the third most talented team in the conference.

Frankly I can’t explain this. Frankly, it’s clear that Corso runs Scout. fuck them. I hope the first thing that happens is that Rich Rod prints that ranking up on a ten foot Fat Head and leaves it in the locker room before we take the field against Western Michigan.

I think this is even worse than Corso saying he doesn’t have Slaton or White in his top 8 Heisman finalists.

What do you expect from pathetic Pete Fiutak? He’s always hated WVU and always will. I think he just likes to piss off the WVU fans that get worked-up enough to respond to his provocations. My dog just farted. That has the same significance as Pete Fiutak’s football analysis and opinions. Both are unpleasant, require no intelligence to create, and are emitted by SOBs.

So these morons have WVU listed as #24 going into the preseason!! So I did what any good Mountaineer do. I e-bitched them out by email!

Here is a response I got via email this morning!

Did you even read the criteria? We rank teams based on how good they are going into the season and NOT how they end up. No defense, changes on the line, mediocre receiving corps … why should WVU be higher? Read the other reviews first, and then rip.

    I would imagine Scout would rank teams according to the rankings they gave the players when they were recruited.

    I mean that looks like a pretty homoerotic Big 10 and ACC love fest.

    But the way that Scout ranks players coming in seems to be a big key. Arkansas (for example) always performs better than their recruiting. West Virginia does too. They are both from states that are not really ripe with Division I football talent, though Florida being that low seems kinda bizarre.

    BTW Vegas odds are just for them to make money. Not who they think will win.

    Oh, and Angry… um, can you explain to me what the relevance of some insignificant preseason poll is? And why, in response thereto, you must represent the Mountain State with such forcefull, yet eloquent, disdain?

    Frankly, their assessment is potentially accurate (while I may not agree with our actual placement). We have new, unproven personnel on the offensive line, a receivers corp comprised of converted running backs and quarterbacks and our D has been rediculously susceptible to the pass. Additionally, we have essentially no depth compared to, say, USC or… admit it… admit it… SEC schools.

    Fortunately, we have a few exceptional players who make up for our weaknesses in other areas and a favorable schedule (i.e. Louisville with new Fraggle Rock coach @ home). Are these factors enough to get us into the BCS game? Sure, there’s a chance, but it is far from guaranteed. Injuries, ball bounces and voter misconceptions will all play a role.

    Furthermore, if we actually get to the BCS game, can we win? Sure, the lesser of two teams in any matchup, provided the relative strengths of the two are within reason, will always have a finite chance of winning the game. (Consider, for example, the relative talent of Oklahoma and Boise St. or the relative talent of Georgia and WVU circa 2005.)

    It seems the rational analysis of WVU this year, (’cause I know you SEC guys want to hear more about it) is, that due to the aforementioned reasons, we have a reasonable shot at getting into the big game and a small chance of actually winning it. But that doesn’t mean we’re the best team in the nation.

    The “best team in the nation” lable applied by the public at large is inherently subjective. Irregardless of what [enter despised non-SEC school here] does on the field, that school will never compare, for example, to an SEC school. I suppose an attempt to remove this inherent subjectiveness is one contributing factor in the push for a playoff system.

    Hell, even Wake Forest held Louisville to 24 points.

    And Taco… hmmm, tacos…. If you read my refernce to the Sugar Bowl critically, it is very different from most other Sugar Bowl references.

    My Gators beat UGA by one more point than WVU did that year. So that means the Gators are now 2005 SEC and Big East Champs, right?

    WVU has to run the ball all the time because Pat White has a weenie arm and is a midget who can’t see over the O-line.

    WVU has a running game and that’s it! That’s enough to get by in the very, very weak Big East. But not in any other conference – especially in the SEC.

    Yep, the running game and a UF Victory over LSU gave Arkansas the SEC West last year.

    But after all was said and done, Arkansas (who closed the season out on a 3-game losing streak) was no better than the 5th best team in the SEC at the END of last year behind UF, LSU, Auburn and Georgia.

    Beg your pardon, but records… 13-1,11-2, are better11-2 than Arkansas’ 10-4, but Georgia’s 9-4 is not a better record nor were they a better team. Georgia is probably the only team in the SEC that was held back by quarterback play more than the Arkansas Razorbacks.

    While I will give you Florida and LSU as better teams last year, I can’t give you a team that lost to Vandy and Kentucky, and I can’t give you a team that the razorbacks soundly defeated in a 27-10 victory in their own stadium.

    if you wanna take it on records, 4th best, if you wanna take it on reality they were the third best. Shoddy special teams play is the only thing that kept Arkansas out of the national championship game though. Kick return for a touchdown against LSU and a muffed punt for a touchdown against Florida and you have some different ball games on your hands.

    No, we wouldn’t have. It took a trick play TD and a INT (handoff) by Chris Leak to Jamaal Anderson for Arky to even be in the SECCG. And another INT by Leak deep in their own territory that led to another Arky TD. Other than that, UF was in control of that game. They were able to move the ball at will on Arky. On the other side, they shutdown the Arky running game and had what – 3, 4 INTs? Arkansas held the lead in that game (21-17) for a matter of minutes and then it was back to 24-21 UF then 31-21 UF then game over.

    Again, my point was that at the END of the year, in my opinion, UF, LSU, UGA and Auburn were all playing better ball than Arky.

    If Florida was in control of the game how do they go down, have to do a fake punt to get a 1st down, but still wind up with a real punting situation on that drive where they pull off a fumble recovery for a touchdown?

    It comes down to special teams. Try getting some facts before you spout wrong numbers. I’m not arguing saying that LSU and Florida are worse than Arkansas, but those were both solid close games. Where the outcome was decided by special teams. UGA and Auburn better than Arkansas isn’t as bad as the Big Easters on here, but I have to disagree.

    And if Leak doesn’t throw those 2 back-to-back INTs right into the Arky Defenders hands, Arky never leads for the entire game. So your point? It works both ways.

    Oh, sorry. It was Antwain Robinson not Jamaal Anderson who had the INT TD.

    I was at the game and at NO point did I think – “Oh gosh, we’re gonna lose it!” However, there was about a 5-minute span where I was pissed at Chris Leak for his 2 mistakes that let Arkansas back in the game.

    Lastly, hey (Arky) led the game for 5 out of 60 minutes.

    Dude, end of the year…UGA ranked 23 wins a close one 19th ranked VT due to really bad VT quarterback play.

    #9 Auburn plays 9-4 Nebraska and wins a really close one.

    With both of these teams you can’t say they played really well in those wins. They were both pretty solid defensively, but Arkansas played Wisconsin. Which had just a nuts team, that only lost one game all season and ended up ranked 5th in the country. Arkansas lost, but you can’t say that they played better.

    UGA Auburn, G Tech, V Tech all wins
    Aub Georgia, Bama, Nebraska
    Ark LSU, Florida, Wisonsin

    who played the toughest three teams? Who played three teams ranked in the top 5? Yes, you can say they won. Yes, you can say that Auburn ended up with a better record and ranking, but you can’t say that they played better without a common ground.

    No, you’re right. Arkansas played the better teams at the end of the year. But don’t give Wisconsin too much credit. They only played 1 ranked team all year long (Michigan) and lost. The Capital One Bowl was boring to watch.

    #33, it’s because the Big East is suspect and we’re tired of hearing about Slaton and White.

    As a WV hater, I did some research to smack the eer around. In the defense of WV fans, their offense actually performed better last year than USC statistically (WV does on average 50% better than the average opponent and USC only does about 33% better). So you get some props on that front.

    That being said, WV’s defense is suspect – opponents normally do 13% better they normally do against their opponents, including the cupcakes. You’ve got 2 guys on your DL that are above 265, a linebacker at 190, and a handful of DB’s under 6 feet tall. How can you expect to defend against 6’5 receivers with a bunch of midgets?

    If you’re going to field a high school team on defense, go play intermurals, brotha!
