Elena Marquez finally caught up with Capers Barr at his cabin high above the Tularosa Basin after months of scheduling, abandoned calls, weather, golf and Barr generally behaving like a man who had agreed to an interview against his better judgment. The exact location was withheld. Photographs were not permitted.
The conversation moved from Southern football culture to the modern West, from fiction and violence to the increasingly dirty underside of college football. Barr described the modern game as the moment college football finally stopped pretending to be amateur athletics and started looking like NFL free agency with marching bands.
That wider world of money, power, institutional pressure and the modern Southwest also informs Barr’s forthcoming thriller, Almost, without giving away where the story ultimately goes.
The novel is expected sometime after Christmas. Barr would not say much more, which naturally made Marquez suspicious.
Originally created as a platform to freely express opinions on football, the Losers with Socks Blog was born as a Website that became a hub for captivating content, insightful commentary, and hilarious comedy centered around the Tennessee Volunteers and their SEC rivals. It has since grown into a hub for satire, commentary, and long-form storytelling that doesn’t ask permission.

Loser With Socks follows actual message boards populated by real users making real public comments. Many quotes and usernames come directly from those boards or from earlier versions of LWS. Some dialogue is condensed, reconstructed, or invented for satire, but the behavior inspiring it is stubbornly real.

Capers E. R. Barr is a retired Army aviator and test pilot who flew Army jets (yes the Army has jets) and Special Electronic Mission Airplanes. Somewhere in the mix he managed to pick up some federal law enforcement experience.
His fiction leans heavily on piss, vinegar, caffeine, anger, experience and only lightly on forgiveness, often exploring men pushed past the point where restraint stops being useful.
He is the author of three books, including The Alabama Hot Pocket and other works featured on LoserWithSocks.com, where his writing blends modern Western grit, cutting satire, and hard-edged BS.

He splits his time between the Paint Rock River Valley in Alabama and Cloudcroft, New Mexico, at 9,800 feet, where the air is thin and mistakes often cost more. A golfer, a mountain runner and an endurance athlete, he is a two-time finisher of the Albuquerque Duke City Marathon.
He is at work on a novel about a man who should have known better and didn’t care, a future project exploring power, influence, and the economics of college football in the NIL era, including the enduring gravitational pull of Nick Saban.
He lives in mountain cabin with two blue heelers, Sancho and Jody, inspired by and then named for his former spouse. It seemed appropriate.
