This week’s player who brought the wood: Matt Grothe, QB South Florida

I was tempted to go with Oklahoma’s Sam Bradford, but in the end Grothe impressed me more with his poise in an overtime victory against #17 Auburn. The numbers weren’t outstanding (18-27, 184 yards, 1 TD) but they came at the right time with the lone touchdown pass being the game-winner on the last play of the overtime period. Not an easy task, especially against an SEC team, at night, in their home stadium. The sophomore also added 31 yards and a score on the ground for rising program South Florida, who has beaten a ranked opponent each of the last 3 years. Grothe has All-American type of potential and if Jim Leavitt’s team can keep finding ways to win the big games, you may see his name on a few Heisman lists in the coming future.
