Georgia fans must feel like it’s the 90’s again. Bill Clinton is making headlines, Pearl Jam still sucks, and The Big Orange is back to humiliating the Dawgs on an annual basis. If only Slobodan Milosevic were still alive……………
Things just haven’t been the same in Athens since the Gay Davids Dynasty crumbled. At one time, it looked as though Mark Richt had finally turned the tables on Tennessee. Dawg fans were cocky, condescending, and confident. But something happened in 2004 as UGA was gearing up for what many fans thought would be the crowning achievement of the Gay Davids Dynasty.
Erik Ainge, a true freshman quarterback from Oregon, would lead the Volunteers to a stunning victory over the Dawgs in Athens. It was a crippling blow to the UGA fans, so fat and happy from feasting on the hobnail boot and Casey Clausen’s broken arm. To contrast……I was in Neyland Stadium, row 1 of section W, when Casey Clausen fumbled at the goal line before the half in 2003. After whats-his-name ran the fumble back for a touchdown, UGA fans had a party at halftime the likes of which I had never witnessed. Pollack (co-Gay David) danced and grabbed his crotch in an orgy of taunting and trash talking. It was a lowpoint for me as a Tennessee fan. The 2004 victory over Georgia ranks up there with my favorite Tennessee wins of all-time simply because of what we took from the Dawgs……………their dreams. It more than made up for the 2003 debacle.
2005 was a disaster on all fronts for Tennessee. Quinthy Shockey played admirably and likely would have given Tennessee more problems than Gay David #1 did the previous season. But Tennessee had no heart, no soul, no leadership, no quarterback, no hopes of even scoring a touchdown if it wasn’t a Jonathon Wade interception. Chalk this one up for UGA.
As I sat in Sanford Stadium (a beautiful facility in the middle of a beautiful campus) I was nearly in tears as the scoreboard read UGA 24 Tennessee 7 in October of 2006. The only thing that lifted my spirits was seeing Herschel Walker on the jumbotron. It was non-stop Herschel. I thought to myself “has there never been a UGA player in the NFL besides Herschel Walker?” Put Eric Zier up there or something, just give Herschel a break. He’s tired. He does all those situps, let him rest. Soon the floodgates open and the Dawgs were drowning in a sea of orange. I admit that my behavior that day was not great. I apologize to anybody who I may have offended. But when we hung 50 it just seemed appropriate to shout at people.
The 2007 Tennessee-Georgia game was just strange. Most Tennessee fans and players had knots in their stomachs. It felt like the Fulmer era was really about to end. A strange thing happened on the way to Fulmer’s demise when Georgia failed to show up. It was like they were sleeping the entire game. I have never seen a team so lifeless. Had they been roofied? I was angry at the entire UGA football program that they brought this horrible product to our stadium. They were better than that, or so I thought. We now know that Tennessee won only because of Ghengis Vol and his band of idiots at Outer Monvolia.
Sometimes I think the UGA football establishment is just too laid back. Athens is too cool for school and sometimes the UGA players seem to think that they are as well. Scooters, oily muscle pictures, REM, and all that jazz. In Knoxville we are on edge, waiting to hit somebody. You bring your little hippy crap into Neyland Stadium and we are going to show you what Mountain Values are all about.
Vols, bitch.
