Thursday’s injury report was the sparking wire. Seven players out. That listing didn’t just light a match. It touched off a Smoky Mountain version of a Palisades fire. And Vol4life came running.
Somewhere along the line, our slightly overweight glass-bottom-boat operator at the Lost Sea in Sweetwater, Tennessee, decided an elite strength coach was supposed to make this Vols roster bulletproof. That’s bold, considering how this started.
Eight months ago, Derek Owings was the home-run hire from Indiana’s 16–0 national-championship team, fresh off being named Strength & Conditioning Coach of the Year.
OldBullsGapVol figured Tennessee might finally become the team with that extra gear in the fourth quarter. bookoffulmer316 said it plainer: “Home fucking run.” Apparently Vol4life and plenty of folks just like him heard that and figured nobody was ever getting hurt again.
Ever.

Now, with seven players out, Vol4life has arrived with a Year Six AI overview of Tennessee injuries under Heupel—because Year Six is a big deal to these fuckers. The injury data dump was so large even LWSVOL didn’t bother to finish it. ThirdAndChavis took one look and said, “I’m not reading that shit.” OldBullsGapVol tried to be polite: “That’s a lot of information.”
Then came the pushback. LightningVol had spent enough time with AI to know exactly how a newb like Vol4life could get himself into trouble. “Start by telling AI you think Tennessee has more injuries than everybody else, and it’ll find a way to agree with you,” he warned.
Apparently Matt4RockyTop’s mood-stabilizing meds were starting to kick in. He made the annoyingly reasonable point that different coaches disclose injuries differently, which makes any apples-to-apples comparison shaky. Then Matt, in an unexpected act of compassion, gave Vol4life the name of his therapist down in Collegedale.
Then TheRealViper, the board’s resident Morgan Freeman—same weathered look, same deep, measured voice, same irritating ability to make everybody else sound hysterical—finally weighed in.
“Now hold on. Football is a violent game. Always has been. Seven young men hurt tells me seven young men are hurt. It doesn’t tell me Derek Owings hurt ’em. You want me to go that far with you, you’re gonna have to show me how those injuries happened.”
That still wasn’t enough for Pantone.
“Seven guys out and we’re still pretending nothing’s wrong. Got it.”
Pantone didn’t rebut a damn thing. He just tossed a little thermite onto Vol4life’s fire that nobody seemed all that interested in putting out.
By breakfast, seven players were still out, and nobody had shown that Derek Owings caused any of it. LightningVol didn’t trust the prompts. TheRealViper wanted to know how the players actually got hurt. Matt, of all people, was making sense. Pantone was no help whatsoever.
Eight months later, the Six Million Dollar Man apparently still has one design flaw: football.
Strength coaches can build bodies. They can make them stronger, faster and better conditioned. They cannot stop a 300-pound man from rolling across somebody’s knee at full speed.
Vol4life can dump all the AI data he wants. Sometimes a guy just gets hurt.
And when that happens, there’s nothing left to do but stand at the precipice, shake your fist at the clouds and sky, and yell, “GET OFF MY LAWN!”
