Review of “Bama Profiles in Courage: Laykin”: (Capers) Barr flexes through an emotional range that most writers would never dare attempt … Humor and Bama sorrow are fused together like twined tree trunks that keep each other standing…..It’s part satire, part character study, with a wry lens on fame, fandom, and the modern South. Well done, Capers, well done.”– Ian Allen, The Times Literary Supplement.

Not All Wins Are Equal

Last weekend’s College Football Playoff games didn’t just entertain. They validated the votes cast by the CFP Selection Committee.

Tulane and James Madison were selected over traditional powerhouses with better records like Penn State, Vanderbilt, or BYU. This decision left many fans and pundits scratching their heads. Might these teams have been a bit more competitive than a G5 team?

What about now? Now those naysayers are eating crow. Tulane and James Madison put on a clinic. Let’s all pause and thank the football Gods that teams with defenses didn’t ruin our collective CFB playoffs.

Those other more “worthy” teams would have kept it ugly and “close”. When people reminisce about great games, they don’t say:

“Man, remember that 2023 semifinal where Iowa kept everything in front of them and held Oregon to under 300 yards of total offense?”

Does it really matter? Yes. It does. At least we were able to stay awake.
