Tennessee has announced a sponsorship patch for its men’s and women’s basketball jerseys.

The patch is small. The money presumably is not.

This is how modern college athletics works. Schools need revenue. Players need revenue. Coaches need revenue. Conferences need revenue. Eventually, the equipment manager will require a seven-figure retention package and a percentage of popcorn sales.

Still, Tennessee had altered the sacred uniform.

The old guard assembled immediately.

OrangeBritches issued the first declaration:

“I understand they need money, but I wish they would leave the uniforms alone. At some point, tradition ought to mean something. Hellfire, it will be like that Tom Cruise racing movie.”

Tradition, in this case, meant that Tennessee’s basketball jersey must remain exactly as OrangeBritches remembered it from whichever season occurred immediately before his first prostate examination.

SectionQ agreed:

“College athletics has completely lost its soul. We’re headed toward NASCAR uniforms.”

This was the prevailing fear.

Today, one small jersey patch.
