Update on the Hillbilly Meltdown in Arkansas: Why Gus Left with reader mail
Oh the Hillbilly Soap Opera that is the legacy of Arkansas Football. I thought only Ole Miss Coach Ed “Bat-Shit Crazy” Orgeron was capable of screwing up a good thing, like a violating a restraining order for stalking or castrating a bull. But here goes Arkansas, a team that wins the SEC West and then the wheels fall off the Houston Nutt Express. Speaking of Ole Miss, does this remind anyone of when the adminstrators started highjacking the football team? Just a little like when Ole Miss AD Pete Boone fired David Cutcliffe? This promises to be a funny storyline and we will follow it to the end. Thank you Arkansas, thank you.
Now Gus is gone. Gone to Tulsa as a ‘Co-Coordinator’. What in the hell is that? A co-coordinator for Tulsa? Things must really suck at Arkansas. To be honest Gus, we hardly knew you even existed, we really thought that you were a puppet. We saw you on the sideline, looking clueless, sad and despondent like that picture on the left. We know that Nutt thought you might hurt yourself or even hurt a player with your crazy VHS Tapes for sale on Amazon.com offensive system. We always felt that the play list in your hands was blank and the head set was hooked up to IPod. Now you can show us how wrong we were.
Oh sure Gus Malzahn (Bobby Ewing?) is leaving Houston’s Nutts (J.R. Ewing?) for
Tulsa, but we don’t think that he will be last departure. Last year, we speculated that the hiring of Malzahn was clearly a Jock Ewing/Frank Broyles action. An action that was thinly disguised plan, well to everyone but Gus and Arkansas Fans, to bring in recruits, a recruit named Mustain-a-licious to be exact. Now Gus is gone to Tulsa and we have to wonder if Mitch Mustain-a-riffic and his Springdale Divas will go with him. Tulsa is 1-AA right? The Divas can play right away?
Some of the juiciest and bestest news always concerns Super Soccer Mom Beck Campbell, Mustain’s mother. Campbell released a statement about the meeting with Frank Broyles along with the other Springdale Diva parents , saying the parents respected Nutt’s prerogative to shape the team’s strategy. Now she wants to assist in the search for the new Offensive Coordinator, she has even mentioned that she wants to call plays too. Wow Beck, good stuff. Who is the luckiest man in Arkansas?
The Springdale Divas are: Damien Williams was one of four star players from Springdale who signed with Arkansas in February, including Mitch Mustain-a-matic, Ben Cleveland and receiver Andrew Norman. The Razorbacks hired Springdale coach Gus Malzahn as offensive coordinator last December.

A recent book about Springdale’s season (BooksaMillion link) last year attributed quotes critical of Nutt to Mustain. According to the book, Mustain questioned the sophistication of Arkansas’ offense during the recruiting process. He also made an off-the-cuff comment after Nutt took credit for a play call following an Arkansas win. The quarterback said Arkansas “would have a better chance of getting me” if Nutt were fired.

“He was talking about the book. It’s easy to see why the two weeks prior to South Carolina, why there was a little bit of digression. He had a lot on him. It was the book. He was worried about it,” Nutt said.
“I had a good meeting with Mitch earlier in the week, and he apologized to me. He wants to be here, he wants to be a Razorback, and he wants to compete for this job, and I’m excited about that,” Nutt said. “Ben Cleveland, I just met with him, he’s very, very excited. He wanted to be here, and he’s putting everything aside. He wants to be a Razorback, and I accept that 100 percent.
“Damian Williams, unfortunately, he could not accept things the way they are, and he’s asked for his release and I have granted his release and he’ll have that [Thursday] morning, and I wish him the best,” Nutt said.
