TUSCALOOSA, Alabama — An “Iron” deficiency has cost
Mike Shula his job as football coach at Alabama.

The school announced Monday that Shula is out after a four-year
tenure that included a surprise 10-win season but also four
consecutive losses to in-state rival Auburn.

A former Crimson Tide quarterback, Shula led the team to a 10-2
record and a Cotton Bowl victory last year but he was unable to
build on the momentum, going 6-6 this season and losing to
Auburn, 22-15 in the annual “Iron Bowl” showdown.

“I have informed Mike Shula that he will not be retained as head
football coach at the University of Alabama,” Alabama athletic
director Mal Moore said. “Mike and his staff took over our
program during a trying period four years ago, and in a number
of ways Mike has been an excellent representative of our
program.

“However, we did not make progress on the field this season and
have not been able to maintain the positive momentum necessary
to return Alabama football to a place among college football’s
elite programs.”

Alabama was 6-3 but lost its final three games, including a
24-16 home loss to former Crimson Tide All-American Sylvester
Croom and Mississippi State on November 4. Croom was the
runner-up to Shula for the Alabama job four years ago. Shula
posted a 26-23 record at Alabama.

Defensive coordinator Joe Kines will assume the role of interim
coach.

“We will immediately begin a national search for a new head
football coach,” Moore said. “I am seeking a proven head coach
with a proven record of achievement who can reach the level of
excellence that all of us desire.”

With Shula’s firing, Alabama will be looking for a coach for the
fourth time since 2000. The son of Hall of Fame coach Don
Shula, Mike Shula took over at Alabama less than four months
before the start of the 2003 season after Mike Price was fired
for an incident at a Pensacola, Florida strip club.

Price had taken over for Dennis Franchione, who left after two
seasons in Tuscaloosa to take the job at Texas A&M.
