Review of “Bama Profiles in Courage: Laykin”: (Capers) Barr flexes through an emotional range that most writers would never dare attempt … Humor and Bama sorrow are fused together like twined tree trunks that keep each other standing…..It’s part satire, part character study, with a wry lens on fame, fandom, and the modern South. Well done, Capers, well done.”– Ian Allen, The Times Literary Supplement.

Nick Saban (shown above at Lake Eufaula) defined:

  1. Motivated solely by a desire for monetary or material gain.
  2. Hired for service in a foreign army.
  3. A professional soldier hired for service in a foreign army.
  4. Prototype for Herban Meyer (who is widely regarded as a poor man’s Nick Saban)

Last week, Saban said flatly, “I’m not going to be the Alabama coach.”On Monday, the scurrilous, persistent Tide came at Nick with a mountain of money. With an official offer. (I love the word scurrilous). Suddenly, Nick is not saying anything flatly anymore.–Miami Herald

“As a college football coach who loves college football, you just hate to see a university that’s done as much for college football as Alabama has horsing around like they’ve been,” Joe Paterno said. “I don’t know whose fault it is. I’m not going to get into it.

Don Shula and I have been friends for a long time. I think he hit it on the head. He said something about leadership. Mal (Moore) is a good man and was a good coach and a good administrator. I just don’t think they’ve been able to get the right combination.”

The fear has begun and Nick hasn’t even accepted the job yet. And probably won’t accept either. He has watched Rich Rodriguez work the Bama offer into a more lucrative contract with his present employer. A technique that rivals the “Dirty Sanchez” known as the “Doing the Rod”. If Saban is unhappy because of lack of total personnel control in Miami, wait until he gets to the Ghettos of Tuscaloosa, he’ll have even less control.

Bama has suffered embarrassment on embarrassment. The humiliation of a another failed run at a coach is likely more damaging than the money ($40 million? insane, driving up coaches salaries). This program has the longest active probationary streak in college athletics. They’ve run through five coaches in ten years. Add in the humilating fact that Auburn is currently on a five year run.

Bama has a majority of its fans living in the past, poor leadership and Bryant, Jr. (Just how many coaching wins does this moron have anyway). Between Moore and Bryant, Jr Bama is on the edge of being a laughing stock.

(I always liked this picture so I posted it. See I don’t hate Bama)

A couple of different perspectives of Saban’s impact from a Bammer and a Corndog are below:

Bammer

If you mix Saban in with all this Crimson history the recruiting could be insane! That is what I am most enthusiastic about! Not to mention he is a great coach! I think that coaching is only gonna get you so much you still have to have quality players that can win games in any situation and Alabama has always brought great players just for being Bama! I wanna see what happens when you add someone that can actually recruit!

I do know that I want our team to get back to what ‘Bama fans have known in the past. We need a “strong” leader to take our program back to the proud spot we once occupied.

Corndog

BAMA fans sound as if you may require a little reality check. Nick Saban is not going to be able to just come in and will a 10 or 11 win season. He made some mistakes while at LSU and LSU’s success in football didn’t come exactly overnight. LSU went 7-4 in his first year at LSU and then he won the bowl game to finish at 8-4. At Michigan State his records were also just about average overall. Should you get Nick Saban as your coach you should also realize that although he is an outstanding coach and recruiter, he absolutely does not walk on water. He is very conservative by nature and sometimes his offensive schemes border on boring, as it was a well know fact that he often meddled with Jimbo Fishers play calling. There were many rumors about Jimbo Fisher dislike of Saban changing plays throughout games. While at LSU he did lose several games he had no business losing. Alabama Birmingham and Ole Miss come to mind, among others. He is conservative almost to a flaw at times. It is rare that he will allow is OC to actually open up the offense.

SABAN’S RECORD:
With Dolphins: 15-17 (2005-present)
With LSU: 48-16 (2000-’04)
With Michigan State: 35-24-1 (1995-’99)
With Toledo: 9-2 (1990)

Shared 2003 NC with one loss

  1. With respects to LWS, rolltideroll is predicting a Saban announcement today. Since I made the mistake on the “georgia site”, I won’t put link here.

  2. Are they saying he is Bama bound?

  3. Three things: *wrong source above, sorry)
    Offer extended, waiting for response
Miami newspapers waffling, Rollbamaroll thinks no stopping him and is preparing to “we here at RollBamaRoll welcome our new overlord head coach. We’d like to remind him that as trusted blog personalities, we can be helpful in rounding up others to toil in his underground sugar caves write glowing features about his coaching genius.”
And finally, more info from Miami
the non-monetary factors on Saban’s mind.

    Sorry for the lengthy post

  4. this will be a sad day for Bama if Nick takes the job. There had to be someone that actually gives a shit about the program that would have been just as successful

  5. Saban’s conservative play calling, combined with bammer’s past reliance on a strong defense and a conservative running game sounds like a good fit to me. bama used to rely on a very conservative but relentless running game that gave them lots of wins.

If Saban ends up at bammer, it will be a means to an end – the end of Fulmer’s downward spiral into mediocrity at Tennessee. The end will justify the means. I always want Tennessee to be competitive, but I think the only thing keeping Fultanic at the helm of the sinking ship is his record against bama.

  6. Nick Saban would be a good fit as leader of the Bama Band. Then Bama could be the best at something….other than buying slaves in Memphis.

  7. The tahd fans don’t realize that Saban never ruled the SEC close to the level that they will expect(the bahr) at an LSU program that has a much better recruting base, especially now that Alabammer competes on a level playing field. LSU lost 3 games at least every year w/Saban except 03 and even then we lost at home to a mediocre, Zook coached UFAG squad. If he thought LSU fans were negative after losing to Ole Miss, UAB, and nearly Troy at home, i can’t wait to see what he thinks about Tuscaloser
