Review of “Bama Profiles in Courage: Laykin”: (Capers) Barr flexes through an emotional range that most writers would never dare attempt … Humor and Bama sorrow are fused together like twined tree trunks that keep each other standing…..It’s part satire, part character study, with a wry lens on fame, fandom, and the modern South. Well done, Capers, well done.”– Ian Allen, The Times Literary Supplement.

(We don’t LOSE IN THOSE SOCKS)

Special to the LWS.  Juan Calzidilla, an illegal Mexican based out of Louisville’s Horse Farms and a rabid Cardinal Fan, provided this report.  His English as a Second Language is really paying off. You hillbillies  try and not  confuse this Juan with the Juan from Springdale Arkansas.  Juan from Springdale, farms Chickens.

The Devil Wears Blue-da

I was there.  It was more like Stokley than the cavernous warehouse that it is.  Thompson Bowling Arena was transformed into a cathedral where a mega-church choir bellowed out strains of Knoxville’s best-loved hymn.  It wasn’t Amazing Grace, but it was amazing.  The Orange Faithful got their money’s worth.

When it comes to basketball, the Devil wears blue.  And, just like in life, it looked at times like evil would win out.  But, the Vol Saints never lost faith and persevered to the end.

Thoughts and Observations:

Kentucky Fans – On my way into the arena, I overheard a Vol fan greet two Wildcat fans with a congenial “good luck.”  Their response:  “We don’t need no good luck.”  Quite often it has been my experience, as it was last night, that Kentucky fans make the rest of us look smart.  So, thank God for Kentucky.

Bernie & UT – I find it interesting that after his playing days ended, he has gotten few accolades.  He is clearly the best player in Tennessee history and maybe the best in SEC history.  LSU named an arena after their best.  But it took 30 years for us to publicly say thanks to Bernard King.  For years, Tennessee’s administration has treated it more like the Burt and Ernie show. I am glad I was there on the night when he finally got his due.

Bernie & NBA – King was not included in the top 50 best players in NBA history – a list that was released by the league a handful of years ago.  Yet, Larry Bird (who played against Magic, Dr. J and some guy named Jordan) said King was the best ever.  Surely King was better than Patrick Ewing.

Peeking Duck – Last year we peeked early and became lame ducks by tourney time.  We were tired late with weak legs and short shots.  This year, Lofton’s injury may actually help us.  He is sore and still recouping.  But, he is also fresh.  He wasn’t 100% last night, but he didn’t look tired.  And, he got his 20 plus.  He also had a couple of outstanding assists.  Hopefully, we’re peeking late.

The Three – Is it my imagination or are we terrible at defending the three?

  1. Juan doesn’t know when to use peak and when to use peek. But he is the best writer on this crazy blog (except when Lloyd Braun decides to use his spell checker). LWS….where did you find this phenom?

  2. Blow it out your ass. While the writing was good, more cutting sarcastic wit is the standard

  3. Don,

I’ve seen a lot of sarcasm on this blog – but very little wit.
