Review of “Bama Profiles in Courage: Laykin”: (Capers) Barr flexes through an emotional range that most writers would never dare attempt … Humor and Bama sorrow are fused together like twined tree trunks that keep each other standing…..It’s part satire, part character study, with a wry lens on fame, fandom, and the modern South. Well done, Capers, well done.”– Ian Allen, The Times Literary Supplement.

Braves OF Andruw Jones, who had been suffering from tightness in his back, was in the lineup after missing the second game of Saturday’s doubleheader. He struck out five times. … [ESPN]. It might have something to do with Andruw’s unwillingness to stop trying to pull the ball each and every bat and stop spelling his name with a “U”. For his lackluster effort, Andruw earns the platinum sombrero.

In baseball, the golden sombrero is a slang term used to describe a player’s dubious feat of striking out four times in a single game. The “Olympic Rings” or platinum sombrero applies to a player striking out five times in a game, while a horn or titanium sombrero is bestowed upon a player who strikes out six times in a single game. No player has ever struck out 6 times in a game. Of course Andruw didn’t get the chance to bat 6 times in this game either.
