Review of “Bama Profiles in Courage: Laykin”: (Capers) Barr flexes through an emotional range that most writers would never dare attempt … Humor and Bama sorrow are fused together like twined tree trunks that keep each other standing…..It’s part satire, part character study, with a wry lens on fame, fandom, and the modern South. Well done, Capers, well done.”– Ian Allen, The Times Literary Supplement.

With the start of college football season about a month away, the Bottom Line will be looking at and previewing all of the teams in the SEC to determine which has the best change of winning the league and possibly the conference’s second consecutive BCS Championship.

I wonder if Urban Meyer took a look at his depth chart after the national championship game and starting crossing off names. And when he was done, do you think he took a look at what was left of his defense, which was arguably the stalwart of that championship squad, and said, “Oh crap?”

Offensively, the Gators will dynamic and explosive. No surprise. This is going to be Tim Tebow’s team but some have to be worried when Meyer says things like this:

“I’d like two quarterbacks,” Meyer said. “Dan (Mullen) and I have talked about it. In this conference, with the style of offense we play and the styles of defense, the quarterback will get hit.”

He can’t be serious. And if he is, who is the foil to Tebow? Will it be Cameron Newton? Or Gatorade National Player of the Year John Brantley? Or what about juco transfer Bryan Waggener? If I were Urban Meyer, I’d be careful not to overthink last year’s success. At some point, your offense needs a proven signal caller to provide consistency and continuity to the unit. The Gators are not deep at running back and they haven’t been in Meyer’s tenure in Gainesville and expect that trend to continue. Tebow will have no shortage of weapons with Percy Harvin, Andre Caldwell and Louis Murphy lined up wide and with four of five offensive lineman returning, he should have plenty of time to chuck the ball around. He will have the opportunity to win or lose a lot of games for this team.

Defensively is where it gets really shaky for the Gators. The only defensive lineman the Gators are returning from last year’s squad is Derrick Harvey, who lead the Gators in sacks, tackles for loss and fumble recoveries. They’ll have to find an end on the other side to prevent Harvey from being consistently double-teamed every down. Gone are Brandon Siler, Earl Everett, Reggie Nelson and Reggie Lewis. The Gators are horribly shallow at the defensive back and linebacker positions and they’re one injury to a starter away from being as porous as a fish net. Florida isn’t going to be grinding out any games this year.

The Gators play the weakest road schedule in the SEC (LSU, Kentucky, Ole Miss, South Carolina) and play host to Auburn, Tennessee and Florida State. If Florida makes it through their visit to Death Valley on Oct. 6 undefeated, Urban Meyer could be looking at another run at the BCS title. But with a defense like they one they’ve got, I wouldn’t bet on it.

Bottom Line Prediction: 10-2. I don’t see the Gators having the defense to make it out of Death Valley with a win and I think they drop a game to either Tennessee or Auburn but not both.

  1. Sweet post. You are my Katie Couric

  2. I agree but another possible loss is at SC

  3. Rob

I think so too…LSU and USC…Not being a UT homer, I can’t see Meyer taking Fulmer for a 3rd straight time…Vols will be underdogs and play best that way. Patrick says 10-2, I say 9-3

  4. agree. you finally have said something smart and unbiased.

  5. Ryan Nelson? Good one there smart guy.

    the correction was made.

  6. From a Gator point of view…….

The foil to Tebow is Cam Newton. Tebow is 6’3″ 230, Newton is 6’5″ 242. Tebow will run the majority of the offense and Newton will come in on short yardage situations (like Tebow did last year). Newton was great in the Spring and picked up the offense very well. Also, UF has only utilized about 40% of Urban’s playbook. Now, in his 3rd year with his players in place, he’ll be able to utilize the other 60% or so.

Someone will emerge at RB. If not, Urban will improvise like he did last year and make it work.

As for the Defense, replacing 9 starters is tough. The talent is there, but it will take time and some growing pains. But then again, Ohio St. replaced 9 starters on D last year and made it to the NC Game…… but they did play in a weak conference….. against weak competition….. and UF waxed ’em…… agh, nevermind.

10-2 or 9-3 is realistic. The UT game is a toss up. Both teams have to replace key players. The SC game could easily be a loss. SOS has outcoached Meyer in both meetings so far.

  7. No way does Florida lose to Auburn this year…. 1) it’s a revenge game, 2) it’s in the Swamp this year (think Alabama last year), and 3) a Meyer team hasn’t lost in the Swamp yet- I’m picking Florida in the Swamp over anybody until someone comes in there and beats them (of course, the third game of the year may have something to say about that)

  8. Last year before the season started, I predicted we would go 11-1 in the regular season, losing only to Auburn on the road, but would avenge the loss by winning the SEC Championship in Atlanta. Granted I did think it would be over Auburn not Arkansas. Still I said we finish 12-1 with a bowl game to go and that if everything fell into place, it just might be the right bowl game. Of course we know how that all worked out. As for this season, I am going to follow the masses again and say that LSU will be all that they are perported to be. Since we play them on the road, I say that is the game we drop, only to avenge it in Atlanta. And once again if everything falls into place, we might be playing for all the marbles come the second week in January.

  9. UT blows.

Ainge will see more time on his back then he does playing time.

UF may have lost a lot of players, but there is more speed and talent than there was last year.

Enjoy looking up at UF for many years.

Now, this is what I’m talking about LWS — solid post PD and solid commentary afterwards. I don’t know if anyone in Gator Nation is with me — but I’m a little concerned about this season. This is Urban’s team — his recruits and his way 100%. I loved last year’s team — that “kick-you-in-the-throat” defense was such a blast to watch. The O struggled at times but was good when it had to be (sans that horrible call in Auburn). This year, the tide will turn and the O will be the show (the way Gator Nation likes it) and the D will hopefully stand tall when it needs to. But there are so many uncertainties. I’m just anxious to kick the season off already. Oh, and the Vols really worry me. Beating them three straight is kinda unheard of. If we make it to ATL I’ll be stoked. But we could easily go 9 and 3.

  11. Beating UT 3 times in a row is not unheard of. Florida has accomplished this before. Expect that trend to continue since I think the SEC has passed him (Fulmer) by. There is really nothing that exciting about any of Fulmer’s offenses. If Fulmer is to beat Florida anytime soon, this is the year. UT will be bringing a new no huddle offense against a relatively young defense. Florida’s advantage is the home crowd, should be exciting. After a close call (Florida wins by 3)this year expect Fulmer to work his way out of coaching in the next 4 years. Auburn will be a good game, but Florida will win. SC will be tough and so will UK. Florida will have to get an early jump on both to win. As much as it pains me to say, Ole Miss is that one game no ever expects that suprises you. Let’s hope Urban can keep them focused.

LL, I’m glad your privy to Urban Myers play book – congrats. Since your “in the know”, how many more plays does “60% more” come out to? 5, 6? Aside from pass to Baker, Pitch to Harvin, Run Tebow off tackle and punt – thats pretty much the jist of the highly touted spread option.

  15. Fucking Gators can’t handle constructive criticism…Somebody pour a cup of piss on my head quick or throw a rock at Ainge’s head

  16. I recently saw pictures of Meyer’s daughter. As if I didn’t respect the guy enough before. Man….

  19. But everyone knows that fans come to football games to see the bands perform. Thwe game is just a warm up distraction.

One time at band camp, two UT Pride trombonists sucked each others mouthpieces off of their trombones….well it ruined the two tromboners.

  22. I really like the correction. One thing, instead of just looking up the players name that you got wrong, you just deleted it. His name is Ryan Smith, it’s not really that hard to look up.

After seeing your initial comment, smart guy, I went through the notes on my desk and the media guide and thought I had injected an extra Ryan into the mix and just took it out. Honest mistake. Though I’m sure you don’t make them. -PD

  24. Oh, I’ve made plenty of mistakes, this blog just seem to be so good at ripping college kids for making mistakes I figured you were perfect. Oh and I’m sure you’ve never smoked an ounce of weed or had a sip of alcohol prior to your 21st birthday right?

  25. Wow Ryan, We rip the coach that hides and fails to discipline his players.

It’s a crying shame when a player like Brandon James is forced to sit out a game because of a minor indiscretion. I mean, who hasn’t been arrested for buying weed from an uncover narc? He was wearing a Gator football jersey for pete’s sake, that should have been a clear sign to the Po-Po that Brandon was OK.
