This is a repost of a repost.  It never gets old.

If you read the NCAA records (online), you won’t be left with a sense that Bama can legitimately claim 12 National Championships. [third saturday in Blogtober SI link]

When you hear a Bammer fan say that Bammer has 12 NCs, you can immediately confront the LIE. Here are THE FACTS:

1925: There was no national champion (or championship) in 1925. Without exception, every poll mentioned in the NCAA record book was assigned retroactively no less than 1 year later, and as many as 55 years later. The two polling methods Bammer quotes are Helms (applied retroactively in 1941) and Football Annual/College Football Researchers Association (whose retroactive application of their method was no earlier than 1982, and is described in the NCAA Record Book as “conducted on a poll by Harry Carson Frye”). Who the hell is Harry Carson Frye? A Bammer? I just didn’t get a good feeling about this, so I did a little more research.

What I found was that Dartmouth appears to have the only legitimate claim to the 1925 championship, as the method used (Dickinson) came into being prior to 1925, although it was not marketed to newspapers until 1926. Dickinson’s method seems to be the first to employ strength-of-schedule and a trophy (the Rissman Trophy). There is a lengthy write-up about the Dickinson poll on the USC website ( http://usctrojans.collegesports.com/sports/
m-footbl/spec-rel/101504aah.html); if you read it, it’s pretty obvious that this was the prevailing method of the day.

Scratch the alleged 1925 championship. This Bammer lie has been exposed and repudiated.

1926: According to Dickinson (the poll in use in 1926), Stanford is the 1926 National Champion. But wait a minute, the Bammers say… Alabama tied Stanford in its final game of the season (the Rose Bowl), and both were otherwise undefeated. The question is – was Dickinson applied after the head-to-head matchup? The answer is YES – check the Stanford website – Stanford received the Rissman Trophy. If there’s any doubt – Notre Dame (believe it or not) has/had permanent possession of the Rissman Trophy; it may have an inscription indicating the 1926 National Champion. My guess is that it’s got “Stanford” next to “1926”, but if you want to be sure, call the Notre Dame Athletic Department; maybe they can tell you for sure. Without any better information….

Scratch the alleged 1926 championship. Another Bammer lie exposed and repudiated.

1930: Notre Dame is ranked #1 by 9 of the 13 polls recognized by the NCAA records for 1930. Of the 13 polls, only three were actually used in 1930: Dickinson, Boand, and Houlgate, and all three selected Notre Dame. The modern day NCAA consensus pick is also Notre Dame.

Scratch the alleged 1930 championship. Another Bammer lie exposed and repudiated.

1934: Here’s our first potential dilemma. Of the polls in use mentioned in the NCAA records, six are actually in existence in 1934, and they’re evenly split between Minnesota and Bammer. The edge would seem to be in Minnesota’s favor (Dickinson picked’em), but if we look further at the NCAA data, on p. 89, the modern-day NCAA consensus pick is Minnesota – who also at least shared the 1935 National Championship with SMU (who lost in their bowl game to Stanford). Minnesota also won the 1936 National Championship outright.

Scratch the alleged 1934 championship. Another Bammer lie exposed and repudiated.

1941: Woops…. it’s Minnesota again. Of the seven polls in existence at the time, Minnesota comes out on top in six (including Dickinson, and the Associated Press). Bammer comes out on top in only one (existing) poll, and no retroactive polls. But it gets better! During the season, Bammer lost to Vanderbilt (who ended the season unranked according to the AP) and Mississippi State (who ended the season ranked #16 according to the AP). AP puts Bammer at #20. No question here…

Scratch the alleged 1941 championship. Another Bammer lie exposed and repudiated.

1961: No doubt here – it’s Bammer’s first National Championship.

1964: Sorry Bammer! No cigar!: Bammer was undefeated until it lost to #5 Texas (who was the unanimous 1963 National Champion) in the Orange Bowl. And if you can’t beat #5, then you can’t be #1. Isn’t this obvious?

Scratch the alleged 1964 championship. Another Bammer lie exposed and repudiated.

1965: Not much doubt here – Michigan State loses its bowl game, and Bammer moves up to #1 from #4. Bear gets National Championship #2.

1973: Sorry Bammer, no cigar here! #1 ranked Bammer plays #4 Notre Dame in the Sugar Bowl – and LOSES 24-23. Notre Dame moves up to #1, and is the consensus National Champion; to say Bammer is better than Notre Dame in 1973 is beyond delusional – it’s an outright lie. The only reason Bammers claim they were National Champions in 1973 is because, at that time, the UPI poll didn’t consider bowl games as the AP and other polls did. It would seem to most people that if you can’t beat #4, then you can’t be #1, but a deception based on an outdated poll is good enough for the Mullet Nation…

Scratch the alleged 1973 championship. Another Bammer lie exposed and repudiated.

1978: Looks like a winner… Bammer loses early in the season to USC, but not long after, USC loses to Arizona State. Both win their bowl games, and finish 10-1. Bammer wins the AP poll, USC the UPI poll. It’s Bammer’s third National Championship.

1979: No question here… Bammer’s 4th National Championship.

1992: No question here either – Bammer’s 5th National Championship.

————————————————-

SO….. in review: 12 – 7 = 5.

FIVE NCs. And five only.

Now that we know the correct number… what would have happened had the NCAA uncovered the corruption at Bammer back in 1958 (Bear’s first year)? I dare say there would be ZERO national championships, and perhaps several hundred FELONY CONVICTIONS…

  3. ’64 was the disputed national title year when Arkansas went undefeated and won our bowl game and got picked #1 by 1/3 polls. The tide were selected by 2/3 including the AP, but the issue is those picks were made before the bowl games. Arkansas won and went undefeated, and the Tide lost.

Yay for a national championship that you can’t put on the side of your equipment truck for Arkansas.

  10. Jai, we live in a world that has championships, and those championships have to be won by a football team with history. Whose gonna win ’em? Auburn? Tennessee? Alabama has a greater responsibility than you could possibly fathom. You weep for Tennessee, and you curse the Tide. You have that luxury. You have the luxury of not knowing what I know. That Tennessee’s demise, while tragic, probably saved lives. And Bama’s existence, while grotesque and incomprehensible to you, saves lives. You don’t want the truth because deep down in places you don’t talk about at parties, you want Bama to win those championships, you need Bama to win those championships. We use words like honor, class, loyalty. We use these words as the backbone of a life spent winning titles. You use them as a punchline. I have neither the time nor the inclination to explain Alabama’s claimed titles to a man who rises and sleeps under the blanket of the very freedom that BAMA provides, and then questions the manner in which BAMA provides it. I would rather you just said thank you, and went on your way, Otherwise, I suggest you pick up a helmet and shoulder pads, and run a post. Either way, I don’t give a damn what you think you are entitled to.

  13. Even if everything in this post is 100% accurate, obviously it’s written out of pure envy. I’ll cut an paste an appropriat read below, which is from a 1920’s Cadillac ad:

    The Penalty of Leadership

In every field of human endeavor, he that is first must perpetually live in the white light of publicity. Whether the leadership be vested in a man or in a manufactured product, emulation and envy are ever at work. In art, in literature, in music, in industry, the reward and the punishment are always the same. The reward is widespread recognition; the punishment, fierce denial and detraction. When a man’s work becomes a standard for the whole world, it also becomes a target for the shafts of the envious few. If his work be merely mediocre, he will be left severely alone – if he achieve a masterpiece, it will set a million tongues a-wagging. Jealousy does not protrude its forked tongue at the artist who produces a commonplace painting. Whatsoever you write, or paint, or play, or sing, or build, no one will strive to surpass or to slander you, unless your work be stamped with the seal of genius. Long, long after a great work or a good work has been done, those who are disappointed or envious continue to cry out that it cannot be done. Spiteful little voices in the domain of art were raised against our own Whistler as a mountebank, long after the big world had acclaimed him its greatest genius. Multitudes flocked to worship at the shrine of Wagner, while the little group of those whom he had dethroned and displaced argued angrily that he was no musician at all. The little world continued to protest that Fulton could not build a steamboat, while the big world flocked to the river to see his boat steam by. The leader is assailed because he is the leader, and the effort to equal him is merely added proof of that leadership. Failing to equal or to excel, the follower seeks to depreciate and to destroy – but only confirms once more the superiority of that which he strives to supplant. There is nothing new in this. It is as old as the world and as old as the human passions – envy, fear, greed, ambition, and the desire to surpass. And it all avails nothing. If the leader truly leads, he remains – the leader. Master-poet, master-painter, master-workman, each in his turn is assailed, and each holds his laurels through the ages. That which is good or great makes itself known, no matter how loud the clamor of denial. That which deserves to live – lives.

  15. Well, fuckhead we are very honored that you would put that much effort into trying to disprove one of the best teams ever, but when national television stations like CBS and ESPN recognize Alabama as having 12 National Championships I believe that the claim is true. Alabama is one of the winningest programs in history and you can’t take that away from them. Oh, and they will always be remembered for the team that had one of the best coaches ever. I understand that you are jealous of Bama’s success, but you need to spend your time doing something else with your life. How about you become a detective since you think you are so good at proving teams and history wrong. Roll Tide! 12 national championships, 21 conference championships and over 700 wins and most bowl appearances and bowl wins than any other team. I hope your team never wins any titles ever and I hope they find some dirt on them because we all know every school does it but not all get caught. Bama will rise from the ashes and dominate again. Guaranteed. Fuck you later, jealous julie!

  17. @16 Wow that was a good one! Bama is just experiencing growing pains. I am still proud of them and I always will be-win or lose! I guess you are too naive or stupid to think that teams don’t still buy players or refs. Get away from your computer, you little nerd and get educated with the ways of the world and business. Everyone has a price and every school will meet that player’s price or demands to get them to play football for them. Man, you need a wake-up call. Bama just gets a hard time because they have been so successful as a football team. You freakin jealous bitches need to quit with that shit. Why doesn’t USC and Oklahoma get a bad reputation for what they have done. Oklahoma has been sanctioned by the NCAA and USC is still under investigation for giving incentives to their players. I even think Notre Dame has been in trouble a few times, but everyone has to pick on Bama. That’s okay it just means people are jealous of Bama, so they must be doing something right. Have a nice day, hater. Roll Tide!

They have been down for, what, about a decade and a half now? They have been down longer even since Phat Phil actually wona championship.

You – and I – talk about Bammers living in the past. Well UT and Phat Phil spend almost as much time on memory lane as the worst Crimson-attired jerk.

Give them their due – they have more SEC championships – which cannot be debied even by hyperobsessives – than anyone else by a bout a dozen. That is impressive,. It is also in the PAST.

Let’s talk abut the programs that actually matter ion today’s SEC: LSU, Florida, and YES Auburn.

By your methods , UT only has One NC

I would agree with most of the NC exclusions, but I would strongly disagee with the rather capricious ‘”tripping” of the mythical 1934 championship. As you state, the polls were evenly divided between Alabaam and Minnesota. Alabama was Rose Bowl champion and quite frankly was almost certainly a better team. Why do I say that? Because Don Hutson – by far the greatest football player of the era – was on that Alabama team.

Hutson set records in the NFL that lasted for 4 decades. He was the most dominant football player in the histroy of the NFL until the arrival of Jim Brown. In the one-platoon era, one player like Hutson had a huge impact on how good a team was. I think you at least have to recognize a 6th champion for “Bama in ’34 even though you seenm hopelessly biased in trying to eliminate as many of these purely mythical titles as you can.

By the way, by your methods Tennessee only has one solitary NC. Same as Auburn.

  26. And the NFL has what to do with college football? Apples to oranges, Bammer…

Twisting my words, taco. I said that Hutson was the greatest football player of his generation and used his NFL credentials to prove that point. He didn’t just get great in the NFL – he was already the best football player in the game when he was playing at Alabama in 1934.

Half the polls said ‘Bama, and the guy here just rather arbitraily decides “Nope – give it to Minnesota.” History strongly suggests that Alabama with Hutson was a lot, lot better team than Minnesota, so iIreject the “Bammer lie” characteriation of that mythical title. “Bammer lie” is not an accurate conclusion drawn from facts. That title claim is actually very strong, and no amount of spin changes that. I gave you facts; all you have spewn out is unorignal attempts at sophmoric humor.

By the way, UT only has one NC by the methods used here . . .thought that was worth saying again.

By your methods , UT only has One NC

Here is an excellent article (from “Cold hard Football facts” – I’ll post a link in the nest entry) explaining just how good Hutson was. He was the preeminent footballer of a generation, and his UA team was almost certainly the best in college football in 1934, strongly arguing against the resoning used in the blog here:

    Don Hutson (6-1, 183)
    Green Bay Packers (1935-1945)
All-Time 11 positions: wide receiver, cornerback
    All-NFL: 9 times
    MVP: 1941, 1932
    NFL champion: 1936, 1939, 1944
    Hometown: Pine Bluff, Arkansas
    College: Alabama
Hall of Fame: 1963 (charter member)

No receiver in history – not even Jerry Rice – dominated the position like Don Hutson. He was also a stellar defensive back and a clear choice to make any superstar team, including our All-Time 11, where he shreds defenses at wide receiver and shuts down opposing offenses at cornerback.

Hutson joined the NFL in its offensive Stone Age but put up remarkably modern numbers. When measured against the standards of his era, no pass catcher can match Hutson for sheer dominance. Compare Hutson, for example, to Rice, the player universally proclaimed by modern football fans as the greatest wideout of all time:
Rice led the league in receptions twice (in 20 seasons).
Hutson led the league in receptions a record eight times (in 11 seasons).
Rice led the league in receiving yards six times.
Hutson led the league in receiving yards seven times, including a record four years in a row (1941-44).
Rice had four 200-yard receiving performances in 303 career games.
Hutson had four 200-yard receiving performances in 116 career games.
Hutson was also a superb defensive back who picked off 30 passes in the six seasons in which the stat was kept. His 30 INTs in 63 games (0.48 INTs per game) puts his theft rate above that of almost every great defensive back in history. All-time interception leader Paul Krause, for example, picked off 81 passes in 226 games (0.36 INTs per game). Ronnie Lott, the only Live Ball Era defensive back in the Hall of Fame, picked off 63 passes in 192 games (0.33 INTs per game).

The knock against Hutson is that he feasted on subpar competition during the war years. There’s certainly some merit to this argument. But his Packers won two NFL championships in the pre-war years (1936, 1939) and he led the league in TDs every year of his career except two (1939, 1945).

Hutson’s signature campaign was 1942, when – in an 11-game season – he intercepted seven passes and hauled in a Ruthian 74 receptions for 1,211 yards (16.4 YPC) and 17 TDs. Projected over a 16-game season, that’s one of the greatest receiving seasons ever: 108 catches for 1,761 yards and 25 TDs.

  29. Oh yeah, well Bahr won 27 NC’s, 128 SEC titles, produced 87 Heisman winners, had 1,986 All-Americans, invented the vaccine for polio, and single handedly won the Battle of Guadalcanal for the current Sabanation.

Taco – I am going to give this one more go, and I’ll use small words without too many syllables so maybe you can comprehend what I am saying: I used the NFL stuff to illustrate just how dominant Hutson was. FOOTBALL IS FOOTBALL – not apples and oranges. He was the best football player in America for a decade. He was just as dominant in college football where he was a consensus All-America; in the 1935 Rose Bowl he had some incredible statistics as well – I think he had like 7 catches for over 150 yards and 2 or 3 TDs. And Hutson was just as good on defense.

So here is the point Taco – listen up: Hutson was the greatest football player in the country. He played on Alabama’s 1934 undefeated untied Rose Bowl Champions. Minnesota had no comparable player – no one in college football had a comparable player and probably no one DID have a comparable player until Jim Brown was at Syracuse in the late ’50s. So to look at these two teams – both selected by the same number of polls – and to just say “Give the NC to Minnesota” is weak, and to call a claim of a mythical NC for this team a “bammer lie” is ridiculous. Alabama’s claim is better than Minnesota’s – and it is mythical regardless.

OK – final post on this stuff – here , copied from the “Rose Bowl Legends” site, is a description of what Hutson did at the Rose Bowl:

“With six catches for 165 yards and two touchdowns, Hutson had one of the great receiving performances in college football history and one of the great days college football had ever seen.”

    That’s 27.5 yards per catch – in 1935!!!

He was – by far – the best player in the country. Alabama was the undefeated untied rose Bowl Champion. Their argument is better than Minnesota’s. End. Period. See ya Taco. BTW facts are a good thing to use to win an argument. You should try that sometime.

  38. Don Hutson couldn’t hold my jock. 6’1 183 lbs? Bitch, please. He wouldn’t cut it playing for Rush Propst. I bet he had a blazing 5.2 forty time.

Keep on holing onto thoughts about dead white guys like Don and Bahr. The rest of the world is living in the present.

  39. Roman Gabriel was 1969 NFL MVP. State therefore should have been ranked No. 1 in 1963. I can play this all day.

Ted Brown scored more TDs and rushed for more yards than anyone else in the ACC. He therefore is a dominant NFL running back, not someone who cashed out after about 7 years and a 2.2 carry average. Football’s football, after all.

The bottom line is it doesn’t matter what Hutson’s stats are or aren’t, or in what era he performed. He was a single player. Granted, this subjective awarding of championships is what gets us into trouble in the first place, but at least those judgments are made on team performance, typically like, wins or losses. I’ve never heard any MNC poll vote justified because someone had a single dominant player. That’s what we have the Heisman for

Get your head out of your ass.

  40. By your methods , UT only has One NC Avatar
By your methods , UT only has One NC

I was done with this, but I am going to reply to that last statement. First let’s do this by team performance – wins and losses. Alabama went 10-0 in 1934 including a 16-point win in theb Rose Bowl. Surprisingly, Minnesota only played 8 games, and only 5 of those were aginst Big Ten competition. That’s right – they win five conference games and they are NC. But you have to remember all this stuff is MYTHICAL.

One of Minnesota’s wins was over North Dakota State, so only 7 winns – seven!- were against major college competition.

Alabama averaged 32 points a game in 1934 – an amazing total for the time. And better than Minnesota. They allowed only 4.5 points per game – better than Minnesota on defense as well.

The probable reason any polls picked Minnesota? Regional bias.

When the team looks better statistically and one of the seminal players of all time is ON that team (and you also need to remember that 11 played the whole game in ’34 – each player carried more weight), you have a strong argument that Alabama was the best team in the country in 1934 – which is the point I am arguing. Alabama had the best team in America in 1934. I don’t see anyone on here putting forth an argument at all that they didn’t. So to call the mythical ’34 title a “bammer lie” is totally unsupportable – like most of the crap that is posted on here.

  41. 73 years ago I awarded the Taco Bell Soft Tacos National Championship trophy to Minnesota. If you don’t like it you can go discuss it with Collette Connell, Albert Means, and Da Bahr. And Don Huston would get pwn3d by me if I lined up across the ball from him.
