Review of “Bama Profiles in Courage: Laykin”: (Capers) Barr flexes through an emotional range that most writers would never dare attempt … Humor and Bama sorrow are fused together like twined tree trunks that keep each other standing…..It’s part satire, part character study, with a wry lens on fame, fandom, and the modern South. Well done, Capers, well done.”– Ian Allen, The Times Literary Supplement.

Dear Mr. Hamilton,

I am writing to you to give my opinion on the current situation in the Tennessee Football program. In short, I think it is time for Phil Fulmer to leave. I know this contradicts my previous letter of December 2005 where I asserted that hiring Coach Cutcliffe would fix all of our problems. That was before I knew Chavis was asleep at the wheel. He, by the way, needs to go too. I know I said the same thing about Randy Sanders in my letters of November and October 2005 (the first October letter before the Alabama game. I hope you threw away my second letter after that game. I didn’t mean to imply that you were at fault as I said in my second postcard of the second week of Novermber of that year). I do appreciate you taking my advice on making Sanders resign; I guess we both underestimated the damage he did to the offense though it sure seems like he’s doing a great job at Kentucky. Should they beat us, I’ll be sending a letter on that as well as I have some ideas on getting him back. I sure hope he doesn’t remember my letters to him. You could show him some of my letters of 2004, where I said some very nice things about him.

As you know from my correspondence over the years, I am a true Vol fan and care deeply for the program. I consider my opinion a little better than most as my predictions have usually panned out. In fact, I trust that Coach Dickey was able to pass my file to you. If you have it handy, you should reference my January 1996 letter where I predicted we were going to win a National Championship though I was off by one year. You should also note in my September 1996 letter that I already had my suspicions about Chavis’ coaching ability even at that time. Of course, I think he took to heart my letters to him in 1997 which led to our National Championship in 1999. He has, unfortunately, relapsed to his old ways which I predicted in 1996, 2002, 2003 and 2005.

I do appreciate what Phil Fulmer did for us. As you may have read, I demanded that he be hired and Majors let go in 1992. I know I said that he should be allowed to stay as long as he wanted in February of 1999, but that was before I knew it was going to be more than a couple of seasons. I wish him the best. I would write directly to him, but it’s obvious he doesn’t read my letters or Chavis would be retiring right now.

As far as replacements, I’m certainly open to many names though I think Steve Spurrier should be at the top of the list. This may seem at odds to the many ill things I have written about him over the years, but he is from Tennessee and we can let bygones be bygones. You should note to him that I called for Coach Wyatt to be fired unceremoniously.
Thank you for you time and consideration,

F.C. King

  1. I can’t imagine a scenario that would bring Spurrier to UT…

Even one involving obscenely filthy amounts of cash and free golf around the world for life…

  2. Stranger things have happened. I say lets do it.

  3. I can’t see it.. Not to mention, could you imagine the brashness of Spurrier with the crassness of UT fans and players?

But then again, Spurrier DID go to the NFL to flunk out with the ‘Skins.

voldude, you want him to do it mainly so fat boy fulmer will move on.

Curious of why Bammeroids and Dawgs want fulmer out

  5. I say keep him.. their program isn’t going anywhere and the half decent guys are on the way out. To be fair, I haven’t followed any recruiting for UT, but as far as I’m concerned, with the amount of powerhouse teams in the SEC, any good kid is going to go somewhere other than…

“WhooooooooHooooo maama’ I’m gittin’ mah degrease at the state school and I’m gunna plays for Fulmer”
