I honestly think a any combination of ACC/Big 10/Big East national championship game could be the cataclysmic event that gets us a playoff. The SEC would go berserk (as it should) about their 1-loss team being out of it, the media would keep jocking USC (like always) because they beat Cal (like always, except that one time that Cal is still living off of from 6 years ago) and every other team and conference in college football would go berserk over the mere suggestion that two one-loss teams could play for the national championship ahead of two unbeatens.
I feel dirty and ashamed that OSU is number one. Given the fact that their schedule is really soft to date. I mean, give them one out of conference cupcake, but Akron, Kent read, Kent write, Kent Stae and YSU. I mean YSU, as great as they are is a 1AA team and no Big ten team should lose to a 1AA team. oops Michigan. I understand keeping money in state, but their schdule to date is weak.
the problem with the “undefeated = national championship worthy” theory is this:
college football has 119 teams, and only 12 slots in which to play games (well 11 for most schools since they use that stupid rule to play a I-AA team). so you play a very small percentage of the entire set of teams. The difference in the talent level between the top and bottom of I-A is enormous. This means that the individual matchups have to be examined to put the win/loss record in perspective.
if you go 12-0 playing some of the crappiest I-A teams, how does that make you more deserving of playing for the title than a team that might be 10-2 or 11-1 that played a much tougher schedule?
So take a look at Hawaii relative to the BCS schools is a difficult task given their current schedule. The best we can do is incorrect comparisons. For example, where does the following argument break down?
1. San Jose St. and Louisiana Tech are much worse than the top BCS conference teams.
2. Hawaii isn’t that much better than either of those two teams.
Therefore
3. Hawaii is worse than the top BCS conference teams.
Whatever you may think about Hawaii’s control over its own schedule, if it plays patsies then it needs to beat those patsies convincingly in order to be considered a national title contender. One squeaker may be a fluke, but two (with a not too convincing victory over Utah State to boot) seems too many to discount.
And college football fans in general would probably not be all that excited about two teams getting to the national championship game without having played a ranked traditional power.
