Review of “Bama Profiles in Courage: Laykin”: (Capers) Barr flexes through an emotional range that most writers would never dare attempt … Humor and Bama sorrow are fused together like twined tree trunks that keep each other standing…..It’s part satire, part character study, with a wry lens on fame, fandom, and the modern South. Well done, Capers, well done.”– Ian Allen, The Times Literary Supplement.

Game day is here kids, and the Volunteer faithful finally have a new quarterback taking the reigns. Phil Fulmer named sophomore Nick Stephens as the Vols’ starter shortly after practice Friday night. In a turn from what many thought would be lip service to change, Fulmer actually made the switch behind center.

“He deserves the chance to see how he does in a game,” Fulmer said. “That’s for our team. We need an offensive lift, and the team is first.”

Fulmer didn’t really talk about who would play in the game, but he hinted as how he’d like it to play out.

“The perfect scenario is that Nick catches fire, takes over and everything happens like you want it to happen. That’s what we’re hoping for,” Fulmer said.

That’s what we’re hoping for too, Phil.

But let’s be real about this… Nick is going to have some struggles out there. He is going to make some mistakes, but at the same time he’s going to be productive and make plays. He’s shown the ability to lead the team and make plays from the QB spot. Really, that’s all this team needs… for a QB to just make a few plays and sustain a few drives. The defense is solid. Special teams is good, although there are always areas for improvement.

Crompton killed us with his inability to translate practice play into game play. To steal one of Fulmer’s old lines, Crompton actually practiced like Tarzan, but played like Jane. Funny how all of us here at LWS said Crompton was a bum for years. Now the whole college football world knows.

  1. Anything is better than Crompton. Rotate them all through there against this weeks cupcake and see how they play in a real game situation.

Also, I can’t believe these leeches who run the cable companies. Charter wants $30+ for the UT game. WTF are they smoking?

$24.95 at Comcast. Not much better.

  3. WITHOUT CROMPTON PLAYING- WE HAVE A CHANCE TO WIN. NOT A GOOD CHANCE, BUT A CHANCE . THIS TEAM MAY BE THE WORST IN 25 YEARS – WE WILL KNOW AFTER GA. WHYISIT JOHN MAJORS WAS FIRED CAUSE HE LOST 3 SEC GAMES IN A ROW, BUT FATSO CAN LOSE 5 IN A ROW AND KEEP HIS JOB? PLEASE EXPLAIN THIS.

  4. The Vols could easily lose the next four games. The one they can win, Mississippi State, being between GA and the Roids makes it even tougher. The question is how many in a row can a mediocre team get up for? Also the Cocks are underrated and no one should get the idea that Tennessee will have it easy in Columbia. Crompton is terrible and getting rid of him at least gives the Vols, with Stephens, an opportunity for a new start and a fresh approach.
