Review of “Bama Profiles in Courage: Laykin”: (Capers) Barr flexes through an emotional range that most writers would never dare attempt … Humor and Bama sorrow are fused together like twined tree trunks that keep each other standing…..It’s part satire, part character study, with a wry lens on fame, fandom, and the modern South. Well done, Capers, well done.”– Ian Allen, The Times Literary Supplement.

As many of you know, I got to know David pretty well during his time here. Now that the deal is done, I thought I’d set the record straight, as I’ve seen him accused of everything from intentionally trying to get fired to save USC money to relaying inside info to Lane to stealing pencils from the AD.

First, David loved it here. He was really excited about what was happening with this program and loved the Orange. He was talking about putting together a #1 class and making serious runs at UF and Bama in the future. He worked ridiculous hours and was probably the hardest road warrior on the staff.

I’m not gonna try to sell you on his coaching abilities, because I don’t know enough to make those judgments. I don’t know how much responsibility he gets for “fixing” Cromptos. But I’ll say this – he was the one who worked the long hours with JC directly. He was the one who fielded the phone calls, dealt with Momma and Daddy Crompton. He was the one who worked on JC’s confidence and kept him upbeat and focused. Assface Lane definitely did not do these things.

David was a tireless recruiter, and this required constant phone work. I mean undending chatting. Who do you think was fielding phone calls from Chaz and Willis and Christian Jones at 1130 in the evening when they wanted to chat about girlfriends and rappers and whatever other nonsense? Again, it was not Assface Lane.

I heard Portly Dave Hooker dog him as a coach on the radio the other day. DR has good contacts around the South and a good reputation. Ask Spurrier what kind of coach he thinks DR will end up being.

As to D Day, DR was once again on the road trying to finalize this class. He was thrilled with progress they were making on the recruiting front. He helped get Willis back and noted that because of it UT had the most players of any school in the AA game.

DR found out on TV. Lane didn’t tell him before. Lane didn’t tell him the morning of. Lane didn’t speak to him before the press conference. Lane didn’t call him after the conference. Lane didn’t call him on the plane there. I am pretty sure that Lane hasn’t called him at all. Monte has called, but that’s about as much as I know. (And the stuff about Monte is true – he is embarrassed, and yet he is enabling).

DR will be ok in the long run. He’ll find a job. He wanted to stay here but knew he was a dead man walking. I would be shocked if he went to USC. He’s disappointed and hurt, both because of what was being built here and because Lane was a big brother of sorts, albeit in an Assface sort of way (think Futureman or Chet from Weird Science).

Anyway, just wanted the psychonecks to know he was loyal to the Orange and deserves a bit of respect.

And as an aside, if you were wondering what I think about Assface Lane, just note this – Lane left his wife and kids home alone with an angry mob in his front yard. I believe the Kiffin’s realtor had to help with situation while Assface Lane was calling our EE’s, counting his cash, and getting the B-list Hollywood hookers back on his speed dial.

  1. So, do you think Dooley had this knowledge before letting him go or do you think it was mainly because of the ties with Kiffin? If he’s that good, then we should have kept him IMO. Good blog though! You made some excellent points! GBO!

  2. Dave Hooker can eat a bag of dicks.

  3. Yes, I think that he had it. Kiffin was the one who turned MDVs around on the field. I imagine that DD has his own QB coach he will want to use

Christmas is going to be awkward

  4. Totally believe that about Monte. What I what to know is – will he (or has he already) give back that $300,000 bonus? If not, the move seems awfully Assface-esque to me. Don’t want to disparage Monte, but definitely want to know.

  5. Poor Monte, he can hug my sack. If he was serious about being embarrassed He should have stayed just to wreck Lane

  6. Good read…didn’t know the back story

    Lane keeps on F’ing
