Review of “Bama Profiles in Courage: Laykin”: (Capers) Barr flexes through an emotional range that most writers would never dare attempt … Humor and Bama sorrow are fused together like twined tree trunks that keep each other standing…..It’s part satire, part character study, with a wry lens on fame, fandom, and the modern South. Well done, Capers, well done.”– Ian Allen, The Times Literary Supplement.

Back about two thousand and five
I left Pennsboro very much alive
I never would’ve made it through the Clarksburg mud
If I hadn’t been riding with the Mountaineer Stud

He shot some panthers up in PA land
Then he took out the drummers in the marching band
Their football program was a major dud
And I thanked the good Lord for the Mountaineer Stud

The Mountaineer Stud was ugly and mean
The color of the sun and his eyes were green
He had the nerve and he had the blood
There never was a man like Mountaineer Stud

Gunned down Marshall in one quick blow
Then crossed the river called the Ohio
Then he aimed his musket toward his Cardinal foe
He squeezed the trigger and let her go

The bearcat and the Mountie couldn’t agree
They got in a fight in Cincinnati
That poor old cat he fell with a thud
And There never was a man like the Mountaineer Stud

The Mountaineer Stud was ugly and mean
The color of the sun and his eyes were green
He had the nerve and he had the blood
There was never a man like the Mountaineer Stud

We rode right back across Tennessee
He whipped Oklahoma and
Dabo Swinney
He found a coach that was super cool
Who was drinking a can of Red Bull

He did pushups after every score
Against Clemson he did four hundred and four
Gold and blue flowed through his blood
And there never was a man like the Mountaineer Stud

The Mountaineer Stud was ugly and mean
The color of the sun and his eyes were green
He had the nerve and he had the blood
There was never a man like the Mountaineer Stud

With his trusty old rifle by his side,
He crossed the mountains and the valleys wide.
He took out his rivals and he shed their blood
And there never was a man like the Mountaineer Stud.

He did pushups after every score
Against Clemson he did four hundred and four
Gold and blue flowed through his blood
And there never was a man like the Mountaineer Stud

The Mountaineer Stud was ugly and mean
The color of the sun and his eyes were green
He had the nerve and he had the blood
There was never a man like the Mountaineer Stud

  1. And that’s why they had to go to San Diego and Idaho to build the conference.
