Review of “Bama Profiles in Courage: Laykin”: (Capers) Barr flexes through an emotional range that most writers would never dare attempt … Humor and Bama sorrow are fused together like twined tree trunks that keep each other standing…..It’s part satire, part character study, with a wry lens on fame, fandom, and the modern South. Well done, Capers, well done.”– Ian Allen, The Times Literary Supplement.

Many people have made it abundantly clear just how many of LSU players are Saban’s guys and attempt to suggest that Saban somehow recruited a lot of Mile’s signees while they were still freshmen and sophmores in high school. I think that this is flat out Orgeron-delusional, as is the assumption that if he did, they decided to come to LSU because of him despite the fact that he bolted for the NFL (and wasn’t exactly successful there)…Here are a few more little recruiting facts about Nick Saban:

He told Vince Young (NFL Rookie of the Year) flat out that he would never play QB on the professional level and recruited him as a WR, losing any chance at him even though he was interested.

He recruited Pat White of West Virginia as a DB only, telling him that was where his future lay and that he wasn’t a Div I QB.

He told Brandon Jacobs (starting RB for the NYG) his only future was a DE and recruited him as one, which cost him a shot at this Louisiana native… and the stories continue.

This amazing defense LSU has, that Bama fans like to credit Saban for building? NINE of eleven starters are from Lousiana, most within 60 miles of Baton Rouge. How great a recruiter do you really have to be to get a kid to go to the lone in-state school? Shula with his Gold Chains and penchant for would have done it – hell, Cutcliffe would have done it.

Saban was a tireless worker even if he was a prick at times, but you gumps with your ‘Bear resurrected, walking on water’ hero worship need to get some perspective. Get excited when he actually does something AT ALABAMA… Here are four quick thoughts/questions for you guys to moll over…

1) If they are all HIS guys, why did he leave them? Is it really a valid recruiting tool to point out all the kids that you lied to, who’s parents that you lied to and then abandoned as a reason they should play for Bama?

2) IF they are all in fact his players, and he went 9-3 with them while Miles has since come in with a whole new staff, suffered the worst natural disaster in the nation’s history and still gone 27-4, does that mean he is just a much, much better coach?

3) Saban’s 2003 national championship team had more of DinNardo’s players on it than Mile’s team this year has Saban’s… no question there but it just makes you think, hmmmmmm….

4) The players recruited by Miles have actually had a higher average star rating than those Saban did, which, IMO is very impressive considering that hurricane Katrina scattered New Orleans talent across the country.

  1. just amazing. first of all, i might “mull” it over…but i don’t know how to “moll” it over. now…some rapid fire. brandon jabobs has been a third stringer most of his life. no matter what became of those other players, saban has really had a problem recruiting future nfl players hasn’t he?? the difference between what les is doing and what saban did, is one turned around a mediocre program, and one was given the keys to a ferrari that he merely had to not fucking driving into a tree. i mean some jobs are easier than others. if charlie weis and urban meyer both died tomorrow, which job would you take????

sometimes i wonder why i take the bait and participate in this bullshit.

  2. damn it, moll/mull

    we love you gerry

  3. this is actually from an email from a corndog fan. I forgot to give the credit

I am an Aub and I dislike Saban based on personality. However you have to give the devil his due: Saban is a tremendous recruiter and any argument trying to state otherwise is moronic. It is just beyond reason.

  5. jai,

i am a grammar nazi…i can’t help it. and based on the source…it makes more sense now.

  6. “if charlie weis and urban meyer both died tomorrow, which job would you take?”

Oh without question the Notre Dame job. I mean, they’ve got a building with a Jesus doing the “touchdown” sign. Have you seen that thing? Remarkable.

  7. i get a shitload of emails off of this blog, i delete them after I am done.

Sometimes I get in a hurry and post and forget a small detail like crediting the author

  8. It is clear to me. Saban sucks. Why? He was Mal Moore’s 3rd or 4th choice while they were whoring out the great powerful Champion?

Can anyone tell me who Bama’s 1st choice was? After Bear, of course

  9. As an LSU corndog, I will vouch for Saban’s recruiting prowess; the man in relentless and insatiable. I’m sure Bama will be on the upswing before long. However Miles is no slouch and we find no recruiting dropoff whatsoever so I’d call it a wash. Without a doubt, Miles has better coordinators. As for the Ferrari, Miles got it used and dented with that 9-3 Saban left. Miles’s record speaks for itself. Les is easier to bear for the fans and the press.

Bama fans, help me out. Saban used to me an absolute lunatic on the sidelines at LSU. If a player blew an assignment, Saban would be iscreamimg n his face at the hashmarks. I’ve watched a few TV games this year and Saban looks positively calm. Is the fire still there on gameday?

  10. I think LSU is a great team and Miles has done a great job there. I also think that Saban has not lost touch with the fire inside that will bring Alabama to a competitive level. I really feel like he is just trying to figure what he has to work with and the best way to get the job done.
There are a few teams I don’t care for in the SEC but I will always pull for class team like LSU, Gerogia, Florida ect. to win as long as they are not palying Bama 🙂
Alabama will be back playing top quality ball and then some people will have nothing to talk about….

I think ‘Bama’s first choice after Bear was Grizzly Adams . . .he had a BEAR in his name after all . . .then maybe Yogi Bear . . . .then maybe Pooh Bear . . .oh wait, isn’t Pooh Bear Mike Shula?

  12. @9
stupid as it may sound i wonder about this. he smiled more after the arkansas game than his entire career at lsu. on the flip side, i’ve already heard of multiple in game benchings in regards to missing assignments and the like. maybe he’s the same on the inside, but just softer on the inside. i’m keeping an eye on his happy ass though.

and i wasn’t saying les couldn’t recruit, but it sure is easier to recruit to what saban left than whatever you want to call lsu in the late 90’s.

“the difference between what les is doing and what saban did, is one turned around a mediocre program, and one was given the keys to a ferrari that he merely had to not fucking driving into a tree.”

Substitute Saban for Les and then replace your Saban with DiNardo and you would have an accurate picture of your Ferrari analogy.

With all the talent in LA how much recruiting really has to be done? All you have to do is prevent the talent from getting picked up by out of state schools, ’cause ULL, ULM, Tulane, and the rest of the bunch are non-factors.

One issue I take with the email is the Pat White comment. Saban was right about White, he is not a D1 QB, he is a B-List D1 QB.

Did you just credit GERRY DINARDO of XFL fame with the LSU National Title???????

  15. taco bell,

i agree 100%, but up until saban noone was getting the job done. peyton manning, warrick dunn, marshall faulk, ike hilliard, troy edwards, reggie wayne. some were highly touted…some weren’t…but just a few studs from louisiana (off the top of my head) who DIDN’T go to lsu in the 90’s.

  16. Gerry DiNardo deserves as much credit for the 2003 LSU NC as Ron Zook deserves for the 2006 UF NC.

Again, all you have to do as a recruiter at LSU is prevent the talent from leaving the state. When you can keep that talent AND dip into the Houston area, southern Mississippi, and the AL and FL panhandles it helps too.

Zook deserves practically zero credit for the UF championship, as DiNardo deserves no real credit as LSU. You may recall the silly spectacle of Bill Curry – that coaching mastermind – attempting mightily to take credit for NCs at both Georgia Tech and Alabama. I’ll never forget Curry at halftime of a GT game tryting to take all the credit for Bobby Ross’ success. What a lame moron Curry is . . . .

  18. I could win a NC coaching at LSU.

Les Fucking Miles has them ranked 1st in the country right now. What could a real coach do with that talent?

Wwell . . .no coach for 35 years before Saban managed that little trick you say is so easy.

I don’t like Saban. I am an AU guy. But you cannot say he accomplished nothing. I think we can compete with him, but we have to deal with reality.
