OldBullsGapVol returned to the message board Wednesday with his annual preseason forecast.

“Tennessee could be good. Or they could be bad. We won’t know until the ball is snapped but even then we have no way of knowing.” –Old Bull’s Gap Vol

Not merely an older poster. There are hundreds of those, men who remember Johnny Majors or George Cafego who dislike alternate uniforms, corporate patches, and believe every third-down defense should involve hitting somebody with a folding chair.

Every Tennessee message board eventually produces an elder statesman—a Smokey Mouintain-esque oracle who is somewhere between Leonard’s Losers and Ticks Picks, only with less accountability and more spreadsheets.

He went to Memphis with TennesseeStud and Bama’s Logan Young, broke bread at Shoney’s with Phil Fulmer, was once challenged to a fistfight by the father of a former Vol quarterback and has allegedly performed keg stands with Rob Lewis.

Of course none of these stories can be verified.

That is what makes them history.

He is the board’s history teacher—the keeper of all Vols football institutional memory, unexplained excel spreadsheets, video tapes and vague comments treated as sacred text.

On this board, his name is OldBullsGapVol.

The username is not hyperbole.
