These are real comments from a popular Vols message board.
At halftime, Tennessee looked dead against No. 1 Texas. The offensive line was a “busted screen door.” Full-face black apparently required a level of badass Tennessee did not possess. There was a broken collarbone, a Texas penalty described as “dick dancing,” and the cleanest scouting report of the afternoon: “Texas is ass. We are worse.”
The second half opened with the board in a very comfortable place. “He is scared.” That got likes. “Bench his ass.” Also liked. Then came the old standby: “You don’t know ball.” By now the board had stopped grading Tennessee and started grading each other.
The quarterback and offensive-line fight kept rolling underneath all of it. Bigun complained that the excuses had already started and everything was being dumped on the quarterback. RogVol cut through it: “NOBODY is saying they are the best ever. The OL and the QB have been terrible today.” Then huntincockro03 dropped the simplest line of the afternoon: “He was sacked 10 times dude.”
Hard to argue with ten sacks. The board managed anyway.
The ugliness had plenty of witnesses. SchwadyVols had already seen the shape of it: “Feels like one of those games where the D keeps you in it most of the game, and then they pull away at the end bc the offense can’t do anything.”
George Cafego, quoting VolJP, went straight at the line: “What an absolute joke of an offensive line this is.” JMOR17 watched the quarterback refuse the quick stuff and finally gave up trying to understand it: “He will not do it. I don’t understand it.”
VirginiaVol eventually reduced the entire offensive philosophy to four words: “THROW THE DAMN BALL, sheesh.”
BACKDAY had moved beyond the afternoon entirely: “Idiotic decision to start a freshman at QB, just need to get portal QB’s from here on out, let the G6 schools develop guys.” Ward Doctor was already wondering whether Heupel was about to finish a game without an offensive touchdown.
The defense, annoyingly, would not let the board settle in. Volunteer4life: “AGAIN THE D SHOWS OUT AGAIN!” Then VFLdiehard, still asking for one decent possession: “Come on offense give me one drive!”
That was the beauty of it. The board wasn’t merely angry anymore. It was comfortable. Almost giddy. Every failure confirmed something somebody had said ten minutes earlier, and every defensive stop gave the offense another chance to prove everybody right.
By then the misery had become almost orderly. Brandon was scared. Bench him. The line couldn’t block anybody. Heupel was a coward. Anybody who disagreed didn’t know ball. Everybody had a lane.
Peace at last.
Then Brandon threw the touchdown pass.
This was so inconvenient.
Then Tennessee recovered the onside kick. Now the board had a real problem. The quarterback who was scared had just thrown a touchdown, and the team everybody had finished burying had the football again.
For a few minutes, Tennessee was threatening the afternoon’s most important achievement: everybody getting to be miserable and right.
Even Kirk Herbstreit tried to help. With Tennessee needing points, Herbstreit was explaining why the Vols should take the field goal. Tennessee scored a touchdown before he could finish the sentence. Herbstreit then spent roughly the next 30 seconds defending advice he had just given to a team that had already ignored it and scored six.
Perfect. Even ESPN was trying to talk Tennessee out of ruining the board’s afternoon.
Then Texas finished it.
The board got what it had been working toward all afternoon. A Tennessee loss. Everybody’s worst fears survived. Misery could finally enjoy itself.
The clock hit zero. Nobody had to delete a damn thing.
The final whistle didn’t calm anybody down. It just opened the postgame investigations.
BBaer1998 opened a thread titled “This bashing of the Oline is a joke” and came armed with a complete alternate history: with Joey Aguilar, Tennessee gives up about four sacks; Brandon’s quarterback play was the worst he had ever seen in a Tennessee game; and the Vols win with Brian Maurer, Justin Worley or Jarrett Guarantano. Twenty-one people reacted. Across the aisle, CRNATM1 needed only six words: “The OL should be embarrassed of themselves.” Thirty-three reactions. Consensus remained unavailable.
RowdyRocky89 blamed the quarterback for putting the line at a disadvantage: “QB play was disastrous. He was just another running back.” Meanwhile Big Orange Bo was already diagramming the missing offense — jet sweeps, stacked receivers, outside tackles, RPOs, quarterback keepers — before reaching the next inevitable conclusion: the offensive coordinator will eventually cost Heupel his job.
Then one loss became a referendum on the entire program. Big Orange Bo counted six straight losses to ranked teams and floated the phrase “James Franklin situation.” cneagle skipped the comparison entirely: “CJH is a 7-9 win coach. Time to accept it.” Major86 replied that he’d been saying it for two seasons and getting ripped for it. Naturally, he stood by it.
Elsewhere, Rich Flair was already looking at “4-5 losses again.” VictoryLapVol surveyed the wreckage and offered perhaps the strongest postgame scouting report of all: “This board is dumb as dirt.”
volball2414 had ten sacks, numerous penalties and an argument that the sack total could have been even worse if Faizon had been mobile. That became another argument over whether the offensive line had ever been good at all, which eventually produced OrangeBuddha calling the other side “absolute clowns.” The game was over. The competition was not.
That’s the ecosystem. Tennessee loses and everybody gets something: a quarterback to bury, a line to defend, a line to prosecute, a coordinator to fire, a coach to downgrade, an old argument to resurrect and, most important, proof that the miserable thing you said three hours ago was right all along.
What a day for the board.
TENNESSEE OH-SHIT TEMPERATURE GAUGE — FINAL
CALM — HE IS SCARED
CONCERNED — BENCH HIS ASS
NERVOUS — YOU DON’T KNOW BALL
HOT — BRANDON TD
VERY HOT — ONSIDE KICK RECOVERED
OH SHIT — WAIT, WE COULD WIN
TEXAS WINS. MISERY WINS.
THE BOARD IS HAPPY AGAIN.
